Our rohatsu (end-of-year) retreat will begin on Wednesday evening, 2 December, with an orientation at 7:30 p.m., followed by the Full-Moon Bodhisattva Ceremony at 8 p.m. , and conclude by Sunday (6 Dec.) noon with the ceremony celebrating Buddha's enlightenment. Zen retreats endeavor to create an environment as supportive as possible for the settling of the spirit, by including periods of zazen (seated meditation) and kinhin (walking meditation) throughout the day and evening, in addition to formal meals, Dharma talks, individual interviews, and work practice. A schedule is posted here for your inspection, but there may be some last-minute changes. While we ask that no one enter the sitting area of the zendo (meditation hall) during a scheduled period of sitting, people can join us for any period of sitting or walking, or for the Dharma talks, by checking the posted schedule either online or on the doors at Issan-ji. However, in order to participate in the meals it is essential to sign up by 5 p.m. Monday, 30 November. You can sign up through this website, or by emailing us directly at hszc108@yahoo.com, or by leaving a message, including your contact information, at (415) 863-2507. If you're unfamiliar with Zen-style retreats, make sure to speak with us before signing up. Everyone is welcome to take part, to whatever degree is manageable.

Issan-ji Study Hour
Beginning Wednesday, 4 November, and excepting Board of Directors meeting dates, we'll be having a regular weekly study hour at Hartford Street, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. The idea is to have time to read and study something together, apart from the specifics of the material at hand. We'll begin with Keizan-zenji's 14th century masterwork, The Transmission of the Light (J. Denko-roku), but even if you think this profound collection of essays on the ancestral lineage wouldn't interest you, please consider joining in to make this truly a Sangha event, rather than an expression of our usual likes and dislikes. We'll focus on the translation by Francis Cook, but there is also a fine version by Thomas Cleary. Everyone is welcome to attend.
